Maggy Bowman Receives the Stan Blum Award for Conservation.
A number of local heros were honored by MRC's membership at our annual membership meeting in October. The Stan Blum Award for Conservation for 2001 was awarded to Maggy Bowman (see photo) for her many years working to protect the environment. The Albert Tuttle Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to the Indian River Lagoon for 2001 was awarded to Lila and Ray DiZefalo. Ray and Lila have been active volunteers with the MRC since 1992, hosting the Grant Brown Bag Lunch Program, as Lagoon Watch Monitors and participants in the Right Whale Monitoring Program. Ruth Stanbridge was awarded the Outstanding Service to the Indian River Lagoon by an Elected Official for 2001 for her many years dedicated to preserving the historical and ecological assets of the lagoon region. The Outstanding Service to the Indian River Lagoon by a Government Employee for 2001 was awarded to Ann Spellman, whose dedication and expertise has protected some of our most endangered species.
The MRC annual membership meeting was held at Captain Hiram's in Sebastian, followed by a boat tour of Pelican Island narrated by Pelican Island guide, Maggy Bowman.
Results are in for the 2001-2002 election, (see Board of Director's list on page 3). In addition to electing 35 Board members, the three proposed changes to the By-Laws were passed.
