Ft. Pierce Works on Port Master Plan From Palm Beach Post and other sources
The future of the Fort Pierce sea port has been debated for more than 20 years. Since the mid-1990s, Fort Pierce officials have tried to develop a master plan for the port development. Recent public meetings have found longshoremen with visions of more local jobs siting down with conservationists who fear the cargo port will pollute the Indian River Lagoon. (See Summer 2000 Marker for Study on Port Impacts to the Lagoon.) Plans for a mega-yacht facility for the site have reached an impasse, as negotiations between the land owner and the Lurssen Yacht Company are reported to have broken down. State statutes require port master plans to comply with the state’s growth management policies. Updating the plan is necessary for St. Lucie County to be eligible for Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development money.
