Back Pumping into Lake Okeechobee.
Sharon Trost from the South Florida Water Management District gave an update on the Back Pumping that was done into Lake Okeechobee during the drought. The Florida DEP issued Emergency Orders for water supply backpumping into the lake. There were periods of back pumping from June to mid Sept. She pointed out that the amount of phosphorous that went into the lake from back pumping is less than the amount from other sources. Lisa Interlandi pointed out that the lake is already over the suggested limits for nutrients. Public input was received concerned with the effects of excess nutrients on the lake. Public input also showed concern about the impacts that high lake levels could have on the aquatic vegetation in the lake.
