2000-2001 Calving Season Best in 20 Years.

With 31 North Atlantic Right Whale calves born and over 500 whale sightings, last winter was the best calving season since scientists started documenting births in 1980. One of the new calves was not spotted until it returned to the feeding grounds in Cape Cod Bay with its mother. Four calves have died, two of which can be attributed to ship collisions. Those animals were recovered off the coasts of Virginia and New York. There were parts of a calf carcass recovered off Flagler Beach in February, but there was too little material remaining to determine a cause of death. DNA studies should prove the sex of the calf and the identity of its mother.
