Affects of Sea Level Rise on Estuaries

Lee Bidgood of the Halifax River Taskforce gave a presentation on global warming and sea level rise. Models produced by the Canadian Climate Center predict that maximum summer temperatures could increase by 4o to 10o F. This rise in global temperature could result in a long term 14 - 30 inch increase in sea level. Dr. Debra Green of the Volusia Water Allies presented the effect the sea level rise would have on the Lagoon region. Coastal communities would be subject to increased storm surges and beach erosion. Greater evaporation would cause a lower water table increasing saltwater intrusion. Higher sea levels would flood the valuable mangrove and saltmarsh habitats.
