Dave Arnold of the Florida Wildlife & Conservation Commission gave a presentation on the State manatee zones in Brevard County and the ruling on the challenge against them. Citizens for Florida Waterways, Standing Watch, and the Cities of Cocoa Beach & Titusville filed a legal challenge against the Manatee Zones imposed by the State. A judge ruled that the zones were based on science and allowed them to go through. Currently, an appeal has been filed but the state is still allowed to move forward with the new zones unless an injunction is filed. The new zones will not take affect until signs are posted. There are also zones already enacted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Sykes Creek and the Barge Canal, these areas will not be affected in any way by the State Zones. In the case of any overlap, the most restrictive zone will take precedence.
