On May 18th, 124 volunteers participated in the 2nd annual Bay Day, hosted by the Bayfront Redevelopment Agency in Palm Bay, in cooperation with the MRC and other local groups. The beautiful bay where the city of Palm Bay originated is now completely free of invasive species (see photo on right). In the past 3 months, MRC volunteers have restored over 10,000 feet of lagoon shoreline, over 1,093,000 square feet of natural habitat (25 acres) in Brevard County. 1,950 native shoreline plants such as Red Mangroves were planted, and 260 mangroves were given away to local resident to plant along the lagoon shoreline. A big thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time, especially Lisa Allgeyer, Joshua Webb, Richard Powell, Ellen Herron, Christie Wilson and Amy Paciello. On average, a single volunteer working 4 hours on a Saturday can restore 2,570 square feet of shoreline, including invasive species removal and planting of native species. Volunteering with the MRC really makes a difference! To volunteer call (321) 504-4500.
