Lagoon Salinity Drops Rapidly with End of Drought

Why Does Salinity Matter?

The Big Question

What Can You do to Help?

Lagoon Day - Saturday, November 16

The Big Question is why are the salinities now even lower then they were before the drought? The summer rains were unusually large and frequent, but the lagoon has seen greater volumes in shorter time periods without dropping to single digits of salinity. The answer may lie in an ongoing process that has been steadily increasing the volumes of freshwater to the lagoon. Every time a new home is built, a new parking lot paved, a new road built, it increases the volume of water that runs off into the lagoon instead of seeping into groundwater. In modern developments, stormwater systems capture a portion of the water that runs off our properties but in large storms or in back to back storms the stormwater systems are usually filled to the brim and overflow into the lagoon anyway. The boom in construction during the drought years are adding to the stormwater problem we face now that the drought is over.
