Invasive Species Spotlight - Melaleuca

Update on 2001-2002 Calving Season

This Fall, MRC Volunteers have eradicated exotic species such as Brazilian Pepper trees and air potatoes restoring over 700,000 square feet of natural habitat along the lagoon. In addition, 1,200 mangroves were planted.

The mangrove propagules collecting season has been extremely successful, with over 10,000 propagules collected. MRC volunteers potted 3,900 of those propagules so far. Those mangrove seedlings will be grown in our greenhouse, and will eventually be planted along the shoreline to restore the natural habitats. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who participated in shoreline restoration events this fall. A special thank to Lisa Allgeyer, John Baker, Mary Bowman, Floyd Bryan, Jack Dearhammer, Sunny Heck, Yulia Malikova, Pauline Mundhenk, Richard Powell, and Rick Silvers. A very special thank to Mary Loschiavo from St. Joseph Catholic School for her tireless efforts in organizing "Make a Difference Day".
