In the last three months invasive species were removed on 610,120 square feet (14 acres) of critical conservation land at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent Bonair Beach by MRC volunteers and staff. The refuge is a pristine area and part of a 2000 acre greenway covering over seven miles of barrier island with a continuous lagoon shoreline. It is haven to over 30 threatened and endangered species such as the Manatee, scrub jay and Johnson seagrass. The refuge is also the home to tarpon, snook, redfish and wading birds. In addition to the MRC's effort, a coordinated effort by The Nature Conservency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife and MRC has also targeted invasive removal at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Nine other sites were restored by the MRC team in both Martin and St. Lucie Counties. Volunteers Needed! If you would like to be a volunteer in the continuing efforts call (772) 429-1200.
