The EPA has added 80 waterbodies back onto the Impaired Waters List. The list of Impaired Waters are waters that are no longer safe for drinking, swimming, fishing or boating. The Clean Water Act required waters on the list to be restored to their uses by the 1990's. The State and Federal government ignored this requirement until sued by environmental organizations. FL DEP had sought to have the 80 water bodies removed from the impaired list but EPA believes DEP has not found evidence to support removing the waterbodies from the list. Under a controversial rule written to please polluters, the DEP considers a waterbody unpaired until it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be impaired.
