Southern-most Right Whale spotted near Jupiter

On January 27, David Logan reported a whale sighting to MRC's hotline (1-888-97-WHALE). He was SCUBA diving with a friend south of Jupiter and surfaced to find a juvenile right whale playing with his boat. He noticed a BOATPIX.com helicopter was in the area and mentioned they may have taken pictures of the whale. BOATPIX.com confirmed photos had been taken and Mr. Logan purchased the pictures for MRC as a donation to the whale program. The photo to the right may be good enough for an individual identification. MRC is waiting to learn whether this animal is the southernmost right whale for the 2003 season, possibly for years. According to Monica Zani at the New England Aquarium, six right whales only one or two years old were seen in the calving grounds this winter. They were so young, they did not have a catalog identification number yet. This whale may have been one of those six. MRC would like to thank Mr. Logan for his help and generous donation of purchasing the pictures for our whale program. We would also like to thank BOATPIX.com for their cooperation and willingness to let MRC use their pictures for scientific and educational purposes.
