Dr. Peter Barile's tests done for Surfriders Foundation, have found nitrogen in the ocean and seaweed collected off Brevard beach of the same isotope was found in human sewage. Officials are not aware of any leaking sewage problems on the barrier island but have set aside funds for further study of Barile's findings by NOAA scientists. The nutrients are known to increase growth of excessive algae blooms, like the red tide experienced in 2002 and overgrowth of seaweeds that can damage delicate corals and other sea life. County testing over the past three years has never shown levels of bacterial high enough to cause any beach closings.
