MRC Volunteers Plant over 1,000 Mangoves

In the last three months, MRC volunteers removed 1,005,500 square feet of invasive species such as Brazilian Pepper from the lagoon shoreline in Brevard County. This was done with support in part from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Invasive species outgrow native species, but do not provide habitat for native wildlife. So far this year volunteers have put in more than 3,900 hours to clear the shoreline in Brevard County alone. In the left photo, MRC's James Gleason and volunteers Tara Dorn, Hudy and Sean Kelly are chipping cut Brazilian pepper trees at Port Canaveral.
