Costly New Septic Tanks Keep Nitrogen out of Water
News Around the Lagoon

On Grant Farm Island, homeowners must use high-tech septic tanks to keep excess nitrogen from the Indian River Lagoon. But elsewhere in Brevard County, people can still install tanks that release excess nitrogen and phosphorus than can foul groundwater and help spur harmful algae blooms. Brevard has more than 70,000 households on septic tanks, including most of the homes south of Melbourne Beach. Some are old, not maintained properly, and can leak or backup during storms, contaminating ground water. Advanced-treatment septic tanks of Advanced Water Engineering Inc. use sponge-like materials and extended biological processes to treat out nitrogen. They cost upward of $10,000 installed, about twice as much as a traditional septic tank. They also use 40% less space for drain fields and reduce the need to dig up roads to fix old broken sewer pipes.
