Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council and activist Linda Young have filed an intent to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to force the federal agency to oversee water pollution discharges in Florida in place of the Florida Dept of Environmental Protection. The groups sited a special grand jury report from 1999 that said water quality was harmed by paper mill, chemical factory and sewage treatment plant discharges allowed by state regulators. They also cited a new Florida Law allowing the Sugar Industry to avoid pollution limits in the Everglades until 2016. Eric Huber, attorney for Sierra Club said, "The federal government has turned a blind eye to this, or worse, worked in concert with state regulators to coddle corporate polluters.
