Surfers Learn 500-Yard Rule Hard Way

The sighting of the mother and calf pair at Cocoa Beach on Feb. 19 brought some attention to the area. A pair of surfers was later seen on several evening news broadcasts within feet of the whales. Police met them when they returned to the beach.

A few weeks later in New Smyrna Beach, kayakers approached whales and people swam out to them with their underwater cameras. They were not only unwittingly violating the Federal Endangered Species Act, they were also putting themselves at risk. A fiftyfoot mother will use her huge tail to protect her calf. If you see anyone within 1500 feet of a right whale, please report it to Florida Fish and Wildlife at 1-888- 404-FWCC, our hotline (1-888-97-WHALE), or your local law enforcement agency immediately so appropriate action can be taken.
