Marineland Volunteer News
from Jim Hain

The mother (#1233) and calf pictured here were sighted at 7:50 a.m. on February 24 by volunteer Libby Lee at Hammock Dunes. The pair was tracked by volunteers as they travelled slowly northward until 5:11 p.m. In midafternoon the pair was photographed from the AirCam aircraft by Joy Hampp just south of Marineland. This mother/calf pair had been sighted several times in various locations during the season.

The Marineland group kept quite busy this season. Despite poor weather conditions in the area, there were 50 verified right whale sightings, of which 36 were photographed (many of these will be individually identified and matched into the catalog). There were 23 reports they were unable to relocate or verify. They also were involved with 8 humpback whale sightings and at least one ocean sunfish stranding.
