2002 Calf Count Increased Recently
Volunteer Sheila McKenney reported a mother and
calf sighting after the end of the calving season last
year on April 11. Aerial survey teams had finished
flying for the season, but Joy Hampp at Marineland still
had camera equipment capable of taking pictures for
identification. Scientists at the New England Aquarium
recently discovered the calf had not been documented
earlier. It was not until February 2003 that the official
calf count for 2002 was increased from 21 to 22 calves!
Way to go, Sheila!
