Whale Program Has Busy 2001-2002 Season
This season the whale network has grown by 124
people thanks to eleven training classes in St. Augustine,
Marineland, New Smyrna Beach, Cape Canaveral,
Satellite Beach, Melbourne, Melbourne Beach, Grant, and
Vero Beach. In all, 400 people attended the free classes
given by Julie Albert, Program Coordinator, and Harry
Richter, former Program Coordinator! Our current
volunteer count for the Northern Right Whale Monitoring
Program is 720! This is a significant improvement over
last year's final count of just over 600.
Thanks to all of you, over 90 calls came in to the right
whale sighting hotline (1-888-97-WHALE). Way to go!!!
The total number of sightings that the NAVY received is
249, a drop from last year's record 513 sightings.
